House passes funding bill for Troy-Birmingham transit center

A federal bill that includes $1.3 million for the construction of the Troy/Birmingham Multi-modal Transit Center has passed the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a statement issued today by U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Hills.

The funding is included in the omnibus federal budget bill for 2010.

The transit center would serve as a regional public transportation hub, providing a transfer point for SMART buses and taxi services and utilize existing Amtrak rail infrastructure, according to Peters’ office.

Birmingham Mayor Rackeline Hoff said in the statement that the cities would also pursue federal TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recover) grant funding, federal EECBG (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant) funding, adding that the Michigan Department of Transportation has applied for federal high speed rail funding for the project.

The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate, which could take up the bill in the next few days, said Cullen Schwarz, Peters’ communications director.
